She has arrived...

I am well into the fifth year of marriage and holding my 1st baby in my arms ... Most of my school & college mates have a toddler and a 2nd in tow when I check their facebook pictures !! This state of affairs was due to a very common problem that women have today - PCOS. PCOS was a constant nightmare to me before I conceived. It was diagnosed quite late - just before my marriage.

Never in my wildest dreams during my adolescence did I ever stop to think that the reason for my haywire periods was something called PCOS... never knew its existence... none of the doctors with whom my mom consulted had the foresight to do an ultrasound scan then. They thought it was a deficiency of haemoglobin and kept giving me some haema-tonic or the other. I was very happy not to be bothered by the irritating period every month.Little did I realize its seriousness...

Finally one of the doctors (a very famous one) had the foresight to suggest an ultrasound and Lo! I found out the culprit... and Google being everybody's doctor,I researched and researched what PCOS meant ... and understood that almost 6 out of 10 women  have this issue... and decided it was not a big problem at all... My husband and myself decided we didn't want kids for some time and the good doctor prescribed birth control pills... I took them for 6 months...In hind-sight this was the worst blunder of my life...how on earth did such a famous doc prescribe birth control pills for a PCOS patient? was the question asked later by my other doctors...

After 2 more doctors and as many no. of years, I lost my faith in allopathy & pitched for homeopathy instead. With great skepticism my husband followed me to the doctor and after 6 months of homeo meds and almost at the end of our patience levels, I conceived. I believe this was nothing short of a miracle. Whether it was the diet that I tried (the stress is on the tried!) or the yoga I did or the meds.. I dont know... But the seemingly impossible became possible..A dream come true.. We were filled with such happiness that it obviously can't be described here ...

After an almost picture perfect pregnancy time - never had morning sickness or any other major issues that go with pregnancy... I went about my pregnancy as if its the greatest project in my life.. little did I know that the project had not even started..

One fine morning..almost to the dot...she arrived... with her own agenda & her own set of rules... tearing to pieces my complacency & my sense of control of my own life...

Some suggestions and tips for PCOSians out there:

These are some points that I have followed myself or would have liked to follow to fight PCOS naturally
- Regular Exercise like walking or Yoga
- Proper diet - fruits , veggies , nuts like almonds, walnuts
- Cinnamon water first thing in the morning (helps insulin resistance)
- Switching to par-boiled or brown rice instead of raw rice (The idea is to avoid processed foods)
- Drinking raspberry tea (said to improve fertility)
- Avoiding FFF (fatty fried fast) foods
- Avoiding carbonated empty calorie soft drinks
